2019 SJPII Sporting Clay Classic

The third annual Saint John Paul II Academy Sporting Clay Classic is scheduled for Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th, 2019. The tournament is at the Quail Creek Plantation and Sporting Clay facility in Okeechobee, Florida. The first two were great events and the third one is going to be even more fun. For those that want to, you can arrive early on Friday afternoon and take advantage of all that the beautiful Quail Creek Plantation has to offer, including the five-stand for practice, the bass lake for fishing, go shopping at the furniture store or just hang out and relax. The fun really starts when the evening festivities begin with a happy hour followed by a gourmet steak dinner. We’ll cap off the night at a welcome party with music, drinks, games, and a beautiful fire pit.

The competition will really heat up on Saturday when teams of 4 will compete in a 100-shot sporting clays tournament in a 14-station wooded course. New this year, we are going to add a flurry competition (all four shooters at the five stand with 20 clays being fired off at the same time), which is a real fun add-on, a poison bird stand (three clays fired off together and you can’t hit the poison clay), two green bird stations (shoot it and get a raffle ticket) and a Taurus Judge station (a .410 caliber handgun). After all the shooting is done, we are going to have a great BBQ lunch, a raffle and mini-auction and then the prize ceremony.

So, how can you help/participate? Well, first off, we need participants. So, we are offering a discount of $100 off the team rate (4 shooters), if you sign up before the end of this school year (May 31, 2019). This event can only be a success if we get enough participants and we need you – beginner, competition shooter, people scared of guns, the para-military experts out there, anyone and everyone. This is a fun, safe event (trust me, the staff at Quail Creek is fanatical about safety) that is unlike the typical golf tournament, or any other fundraising event. You can ask anyone that has gone to either of the first two tournaments, they will tell you how much fun they had at it.

Second, we need volunteers to help with the BBQ, the mini-auction, the raffle, drinks and snacks on the course, etc. So, all the non-shooting spouses, students, faculty staff, coaches, everyone that wants to make this a great and fun event. To make it easier on everyone, we are going to offer a chartered bus to Quail Creek Plantation that will leave Saturday morning and come back in the afternoon after the award ceremony. The bus will be for anyone including the shooters and the volunteers.

Third, we need sponsors. Peter Gary, CEO of Pinnacle Advertising has generously volunteered to be our presenting sponsor. However, we still need Gold Team sponsors, sponsors for the new events (the flurry, the poison bird, the green bird and the Judge stations), sponsors for the raffle and mini-auction items and a sponsor for the Academy bus that will leave SJPII on Saturday.

Please check out the registration page and sign up! It is guaranteed to be a great event!

All of the proceeds will be used to financially help SJPII students dealing with an unexpected family loss or crisis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sporting clays is a a form of clay pigeon shooting, often described as "golf with a shotgun" because the typical course includes from 10-15 different shooting stations laid out over natural terrain. Our event will have 14 stations in a beautifully wooded course. At each station, the participant will get several opportunities to shoot at clay targets coming from different directions. There are a total of 100 targets in the course with 1 point earned for each target hit.

No experience is necessary. This event will be fun for all skills levels. Newcommers and experienced shooters of all ages are welcome to come out and support our school.

Absolutely. You're encouraged to take your own gun. All ammunition must be 7-1/2 shot or higher.

The maximum load allowed is 1-1/8 oz in 7-1/2, 8 and 9 shot. You can shoot 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge or .410 bore. Please note that steel shot is NOT allowed.

Your choice of shotgun will play a big part in how much you enjoy this event. While the facility allows 12ga, 20ga, 28ga, and .410 bore shotguns to be used, you should pick a gauge that you are comfortable with. A 12 gauge shotgun will have more recoil, or "kick" than a 20 or 28 gauge. The .410 is the smallest shell with the lightest recoil. That being said, smaller shells will have fewer shot inside which will make it more difficult to hit the target.

No problem! A variety of shotguns are available for rent by Quail Creek Plantation. Contact them directly to reserve yours well ahead of the tournament date. The cost of a gun rental is $25 per gun per day and you must be 18 to rent the guns. Call (863) 763-2529 to make arrangements.

Yes! We would love to see our students take part in this event. It will be considered an excused absence and students will have to make up any missed work.
